Last week I was filming at the Dallas County Jail. Three of the women I interviewed had been sexually abused . Some from family members and another by a friend. As I listened to them tell their stories through their shoes, each had found strong footing in the Sole Sisters project. I listen to so many women who have been victims of violence, It is overwhelming and I keep asking myself why. What can I do about it?
The other day, I was driving to Kerrville , Texas and I stopped in Commanche at the courthouse in search of a ladies room. And there was a small table set-up with 11 shoes each representing a woman who had been killed in a domestic violence situation. I looked at each shoe from the high heel to the boot to the tennis shoe. Each shoe was saying “I was here , I lived and my shoe represents who I was read my story. Don’t forget me.” I left sad. And I still don’t know what to do.
