This morning I woke up, got ready and made my last drive to the office. Today marks a little over 4 weeks, and at noon it will have been 280 hours since I joined the SOLE SISTERS team. It has definitely been a long journey, but one that I am very glad I took up.
It has been an AMAZING experience working on this project and getting to meet all of the people either from SOLE SISTERS, or the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program.
Starting this job was like being back in my baby booties – I felt young, slightly overwhelmed, and just a tad bit stressed. But after getting into the work and reading the stories, I remembered exactly why it was that I left my major and chose a new one. I live for this kind of work, and SOLE SISTERS combined two of my passions. Not only have I been able to learn about marketing, I’ve been able to do so at a non-profit agency. Helping out in and giving back to my community are things that I love doing, and SOLE SISTERS gave me the chance to do just that. Most people can’t really imagine how a film company could count as a non-profit, but they haven’t seen the work that goes on behind the scenes. I’ve sat in on workshops with teen mothers and senior citizens, and it just blows me away how a one hour session can brighten someone’s day or give them an outlet from the stress in their life. It makes me sad to know that in an hour or so, I’ll be making my last commute from here.
The word solstice literally means, “the apparent standing still of the sun.” That’s what SOLE SISTERS has been to me. It feels as if the Sun has not stopped shining down on me since my first day working in this office. I’ve met the brightest people, and will truly miss everyone on the team. It will definitely be a change not waking up early to come work in the back-office “sorority” room, or hearing everything dictated to me by Nadia in a her lovely British accent, or listening to Alyx’s constant Disney soundtrack and running around high schools creating our own photo-ops, or having Sole Brother James bail me out of tech-situations (I am apparently a black hole when it comes to technology – things just disappear!) or having breaks with Valen and dreaming about the trips to Europe we want to go on. And a huge thank you to Cynthia and Allen for giving me this opportunity and teaching me so much in the little time that I was here! I’m going to miss all of you wonderful ladies (and gentlemen!).
The time has come for my SOLE SISTERS “sole-stice” to end – the sun may be setting on my little adventure here, but it will definitely be rising to greet me on my next one…new shoes in hand.
