OUTREACH PROGRAM
News & Stories
Media Projects Inc. is collaborating with the El Centro Prison Arts Program to teach and bring art into incarcerated womens’ lives in the Dallas County Jail Shoes are a non-threatening accessory that every women needs. This program gives female inmates the opportunity to share and express their identity and their relationship with their shoes through art and writing.
The women meet with Sandra Lara, an art and writing teacher. They are given a background about the SOLE SISTERS project and are encouraged to write their “shoe” story and learn to do art that corresponds to it. Cynthia works with the women asking them questions about their art and stories.
Many of the women suffer from sexual and physical abuse. The storytelling of their shoes is a healing process that provides an opportunity for reflection and self-discovery. Our program’s intent is to create a sisterhood of empowerment, self-confidence and creativity.
We film them as they present their stories to their group. This process boosts the inmates’ self-esteem . It encourages them to reflect on their lives- take ownership of their past and acknowledge their present situation And it motivates them envision their life beyond prison. Their powerful stories will be featured in the SOLE SISTERS documentary and play.

When my Mom got sick with pancreatic cancer, my sister Ann and I found brand new red high heels in her closet. We told Mom she had to get better so she could get up and dance in those shoes. She smiled, tried, but never got well. But those shoes allowed her to dream and hope. Sole Sisters is dedicated to my Mom and all women who have special relationships with their shoes.
